Gleeson Golf Academy offers a comprehensive club fitting and repair service to tend to all of your equipment needs. Custom fit golf clubs will make a big difference in your game no matter your skill level.

We also use the latest technology in TrackMan , which uses a dual radar system that precisely tracks the flight of the golf ball and provides data such as launch conditions, spin rates, ball speeds, smash factors and much more to help in dialing in the perfect club for every golfer.

Our custom fitting department is headed up by Cormac Smyth. Cormac is an Assistant P.G.A. Professional currently training under Donal Gleeson.

With over 8 years experience in the industry at both a high street and grassroots level he has attained a keen knowledge of equipment from golfs leading brands and we’re confident the right equipment will be found for our clients.

He is certified by TrackMan, PING, Callaway, Taylormade & Titleist and has conducted a multitude of successful fits with proven results.

Each custom fitting is completely bias free in terms of product recommendations. Performance and feel are the only deciding factors.

The key parameters that separate us from the competition are:

  • TrackMan Technology.

  • An Outdoor Grass Range which offers true performance under golf course conditions rather than mats, nets and simulators which offer a false perception of performance and feeling.

  • Clean, Premium Balls instead of inferior range balls.

The cost of our custom fitting services are all able to be redeemed upon purchase of equipment or any adjustment. Think of the cost of the fitting as a voucher towards your new clubs.

We also offer a post-fitting 30 minute session on TrackMan to ensure the performance of your equipment is up to the required standard. This session can be used to determine yardages for new irons or wedges or if any minor adjustments need to be made in driver settings.

Custom Fitting Process:

You will want to bring your set of clubs with you for your fitter to initially assess what you currently have been playing. This will also serve as a good comparison to what the benefits will be as you test new equipment in finding the exact fit. Both a visual look at your posture and set up along with a static test will be done initially. You will then hit balls using the TrackMan Launch Monitor, which is the finest piece of equipment in the business and used by all major manufacturers. Then depending on your Track Man numbers, goals for your game, and practice habits vs. playing time, our custom fitter will give you a series of combinations of heads and shafts, monitoring each combination and pin pointing your exact fit.

This process takes approximately 1 hour for irons only or driver only and approximately 3 hours per whole set of clubs, which includes fairways, wedges and putter.

IRONS: Iron fittings have a few more considerations than a driver as you have the short, mid and long irons. As of recent times you now have hybrids replacing long irons so the gapping and specific lofts need to be carefully considered. Shaft length/weight, club lie & loft as well as performance & feel will be the main considerations.

DRIVER: With the new technology in driver head adjustments it usually takes the whole hour to dial in the exact shaft, loft and lie of the new drivers. Since all drivers use graphite shafts which have a multitude of different characteristics and the heads have so many possibilities it takes time to get the combination correct. It is also another reason why it is so important that you have an expert club fitter who has many years of experience and is educated with all the newest technology.

WEDGES: Wedge fitting and gapping should also be considered when optimizing your set of clubs. There are so many options of lofts and bounces these days that it often becomes very confusing as to what you should be using. By today’s standards most pitching wedges are around 47 degrees of loft and can go to as low as 43 degrees in certain cases. Your sand wedge gapping needs to be even amount between them and the pitching wedge for example or alternatively you can add a gap wedge into your bag to accommodate for the stronger lofts in your irons. 47 degree PW, 53 degree gap wedge and 59 degree lob wedge. That would be a 6 degree gap between each club. Some players prefer a 5 degree gap while others like to carry 4 wedges and have a 4 degree difference between them. These options will all be discussed with your fitter. The amount of bounce on each club needs to vary as well depending upon your swing shape and your talent level.

PUTTER: Most golfers underestimate the value and need of a properly fitted putter. The length of putters was initially decided to be 35 inches long, so that they can stick out of a standard size golf bag. However, because golfers come in all heights with different arm lengths, it is ridiculous to think that one size fits all. The putter is also the most used club in your bag and you will take more strokes with it than any other club. For that reason ,you owe it to your game to get properly fit. For standard style putters, the biggest three variables for putter fitting are the length, strength of stroke arc and balance characteristics of the putter head. Grip size and putter head shape are somewhat individual preferences although larger mallet heads may assist in alignment and proffer stronger results.

Step 1 : Interview

An initial discussion designed to allow your fitter to gain a general insight in to your game and the areas in which we seek improvement.

Questions help the fitter identify your ball-flight tendencies, equipment specifications, your likes and dislikes about your current set, and your needs and preferences from new equipment.

The dialogue will continue throughout the fitting to ensure that your expectations are being met every step of the way.

Step 2 : Bench-Marking

5 - 7 Minutes of the client hitting shots with their current equipment.

Each shot is verified and recorded by Trackman for referral throughout the entire fitting session.

Bench-marking allows for the fitter to gain a further degree of insight in to your swing and ball flight tendencies.

Step 3 : Static Fitting

Fittings continue with the fitter determining your initial club specifications based on your preferences, needs and ability.

For drivers, fairways and hybrids, you'll discuss the general performance characteristics of different models, lofts and shafts.

For an iron fitting, your height and wrist-to-floor measurement are taken to help calculate your static iron lie angle and shaft length, and your hand dimensions are used to calculate your static grip grip size.

Step 4 : Dynamic Swing Test

For an iron fitting, you will hit a few golf balls from an impact board with special tape on the sole of the club. When the club hits the board, it will leave a mark on the tape that helps the fitter better understand how your setup, posture, and swing affect the clubhead’s position at impact. The fitter then makes adjustments to arrive at your lie angle.

For drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, face tape or spray is applied to the face and the impact marks are analyzed for consistency to determine the optimal shaft length.

Step 5 : Ball Flight Analysis

All fittings offer some degree of ball-flight analysis from the driver through the wedges. The fitter will continue to utilize a variety of clubs with slightly different specifications to isolate each fitting variable.

This process helps determine the combination of model, loft, lie angle, shaft length and flex, and grip that gives you the best opportunity to achieve your optimal ball flight.
